Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchens in a modern day home are very important for a number of reasons, especially with a big family. The kitchen cabinets play a big role in how it all works. Because of our busy lives, the kitchen is the place where we gather and eat together, and the design of the kitchen is critical in how this super important room fulfils its functions.

Form vs function is the way a design starts and ends. The functions determine the design aesthetics, and the work flow patterns and of course the kitchen cabinets size, orientation, and style. Will the stove be built in? Will the fridge be built in? will you add a writing desk to work at? Are the standard heights appropriate for you? Will the fittings be modern, old fashioned, wood, steel or glass?

Kitchen cabinets come in all shapes, sizes, designs, colors, and materials. Since they actually take up the largest part of a kitchens wall space, they are super important to the overall "look and feel" of the design. The Kitchen cabinet hardware is another example of a form vs function decision that needs to be made. Kitchen cabinet hardware can be bulky or tiny, it can blend in or stand out, depending on the kitchen design.

All things being equal, if the kitchen cabinet design is such that it can accomplish all the design goals functionally and also create the ambience that the designer is seeking, then it can be considered a success.

Modern day kitchen cabinets have a stunning array of design choices. All kitchen designs take into consideration the flooring materials, the cabinet lowers, the counter top, the plumbing fittings,the backsplash, the upper cabinets, the vents, the cielings and the lighting.

Kitchen cabinets are an important but not the only thing to consider in the design. The kitchen cabinets need to match the rest of the design, not nescesarily the other way around. The most important design choices will consider what the inhabitants need first, and the look and feel second.
